Family legacy lives on
Not too many businesses survive more than six decades let alone stay in the hands of the same family for all that time, but that's exactly what makes JC & FM Sims Drilling Contractors such a special story.
What started out as one man's dream over 60 years ago, is now in the hands of his grandson. Jack Sims started the company with one wooden drilling rig in 1950 and the rest is not just business history but the history of a family as well. In 1956 son Darryl was the first to join his father in the well boring business, closely followed by Garry in 1968. It was eight years later that Graeme and Robert joined the successful business.
1st of August 2011 Darryl, Graeme and Garry headed into retirement, officially handing over the reins to the new owner Adam Sims - Garry's son and Jack's grandson. It's yet another chapter in the history of this iconic family.
The business has undergone incredible transformation over the six decades it's been in operation and with the enthusiasm and drive shown by Adam Sims it's already seeing major growth and fast becoming sought after by companies nationwide.
Jack started the business at 82 Sturt Street, Mount Gambier and it was in 1986, coinciding with a significant $100,000 investment in a new drilling rig that saw the Sims family move its base to the current home 12 Ralston Road, Mount Gambier.
JC & FM Sims was instrumental in setting up irrigation throughout the vineyards of Coonawarra, drilled at Lake Bonney in the aftermath of Ash Wednesday to deal with the burnt logs and has more recently embraced the green energy sector, drilling earth holes for wind farm towers at Port Broughton and Glen Thompson. They have also worked on numerous projects for City of Mount Gambier, District Council of Grant, Wattle Range Council, Naracoorte & Lucindale Council and SA Water. JC & FM Sims now boasts two rotary drilling rigs and is continuing to service the entire South East, Western Victoria and beyond.
